Vanuatu: Bores, Wells and Pumping Pressure on Aquifers, According to SPC
The Pacific Community (SPC) Water, Sanitation and Hygiene site, drawing on SOPAC's 2007 IWRM Diagnostic Reports, says:
- Rainfall averages 2000-4000 mm per year, with a wet season from November to April.
- Urban areas mainly rely on shallow aquifers. Rural areas use bores, wells, springs, rivers and rainwater catchments.
- Groundwater quality in Port Vila and Luganville is generally good (calcium hardness noted); neither supply needs treatment beyond chlorination.
- Aquifer levels are thought to be decreasing while pumping demands increase, with pressure from housing, agriculture and other developments.
- Rural supplies are donor-funded and run by local communities.
Not verified: this is 2007-based data; current conditions, permits and pump requirements in Vanuatu were not checked. Groundwater data is described by the source as sporadic and mostly focused on Port Vila and Luganville.
