Nebraska Private Wells: State Nitrate Sampling Effort and Test Kits
Nebraska Private Wells: State Nitrate Sampling Effort and Test Kits
Information only. Based on a Nebraska DWEE page about its nitrate drinking water study.
- Private domestic wells are not regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act.
- Owners who want to test for nitrate and/or bacteria can request a kit from the state Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Environmental Lab.
- A free sampling effort ran from November 2023 to March 1, 2024. Nearly 3,500 kits were returned, which the page calls the largest private domestic well nitrate sampling effort in state history.
- The 2023-2024 data is available through the Nebraska Groundwater Clearinghouse, and the page describes an interactive web GIS tool for DWEE and resource partners to assess nitrate risk for private wells (it does not say the public can use it).
Not verified: current kit availability, ordering steps and what the data shows for any specific area. We omit kit prices.
