Florida Irrigation Wells: Watering Restrictions Still Apply (St. Johns Example)
Florida Irrigation Wells: Watering Restrictions Still Apply (St. Johns Example)
This piece is short on purpose. We could verify only the St. Johns River Water Management District FAQ. A UF/IFAS page we opened did not cover wells or permits.
What the district FAQ says
- Restrictions apply to water from ground or surface water, a private well or pump, or a public or private utility. A private irrigation well is not an exemption.
- During Eastern Standard Time one watering day per week is allowed; during daylight saving time, two days per week. In December to February, turf is usually dormant and every other week is described as enough.
- Vegetable gardens may be irrigated before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. with no day limit. Hand-held hoses, micro-spray, drip and bubbler systems are allowed any time.
- Newly planted grass and plants are exempt (details on the district's restriction page).
- Reclaimed water is allowed any time under district rules, but local governments may restrict it.

Not verified: well permit requirements, well construction rules and rules of other Florida water management districts. Check your own district and a licensed Florida well contractor before drilling.
