Opening Your Pool in Canada: A Spring Pump and Filter Checklist

Opening Your Pool in Canada: A Spring Pump and Filter Checklist

In Canada, a pool sits under cover for months. When the snow is gone, the pump, filter, and water chemistry all need attention before the first swim. This guide follows two Canadian sources, a retailer's opening guide and a utility's energy tips, and adds general good practice. Always follow your equipment manuals.

When to open

Both sources point to mid-April as a typical time, and the utility says to start before the water reaches 21 degrees Celsius (70 F). The reason given is that opening late lets algae or bacteria develop, which makes the water harder to clear. Your region may differ, so use your own weather and your installer's advice. Make sure all snow and ice have melted first.

Step 1: Remove the cover

Pump or vacuum off standing water, sweep off debris, and avoid letting dirt fall into the pool. Clean and dry the cover before you store it, which helps it last.

Step 2: Inspect the pool and equipment

Check that the liner is secure and that the water level is not unusually low, which the retailer says could indicate a leak. Tighten fittings, replace damaged parts, and check the expiry dates of pool products. The utility also suggests checking hoses, valves, the skimmer, and joints.

Step 3: Reinstall fittings

The retailer's order is: return plug replaced by the water return, light if you have one, skimmer and its door, and last the steps, ladder, and diving board.

Step 4: Reconnect the pump and filter

Step 5: Fill, prime, and start

Fill the pool with a garden hose to about three quarters of the skimmer height. Prime the pump, start the filter, and backwash to clear large debris. Turn on a salt system, chlorinator, or purifier if you have one, and power a heater or heat pump if you use one.

Step 6: Use an opening kit

The retailer describes pouring a degreaser slowly around the inside of the pool and running the pump for 1 hour. Other kit products are applied as directed and left to work for 24 hours with the pump in filtration mode. Then backwash again and vacuum with the filter in filtration mode to limit water loss. Product instructions differ, so follow the label.

Step 7: Test the water

The retailer gives these target ranges once the water is reasonably clear:

It suggests retesting about every six weeks. Ranges can vary by sanitizer type and product, so confirm them with your pool store or the product manufacturer.
